Monophonic ring tones developed into the polyphonic ring tones that allow for more than one sound to play at the same time. The monophonic ring tones are so called because they only play one sound at a time. They are also popular because they are widely available.
Today when a cell phone rings you want to see who is that with that ring tone? This is equivalent of a guitar with only one string. Monophonic ring tones are the classic mobile phone ring tones. All you can vary is the volume of the sound and the number of times you hear the sound.
